Morro de Sao Paulo, the island has become a favourite, and as you walk along the narrow streets, without any cars, you will hear the most varied accents of Spanish, English, Hebrew, German, Finnish, Japanese, Portuguese and ‘Bahianese’. There is room for everyone.

At the southern end of Brazil’s Bahia State is the town of Trancoso. This small town awaits visitors with white sandy beaches set against cliffs with natural swimming pools formed by reefs at low tide, coconut groves and rainforest, balmy nights and the most famous village green in Brazil.

Shaped as a rectangle, the village retains the original style of its housing architecture with many quaint little houses. It is famous for its beaches, such as Praia dos Nativos, Praia dos Coqueiros and Praia do Espelho. In recent years the location has been developed by the hotel industry, including the French Club Mediterranée, which has boosted real estate value.

This portion of the southern Bahia coastline is called the Discovery Coast, or Costa de Descobrimento. Crowded during the summer and particularly on the New Year holiday, Trancoso is a wonderful destination year round. May to September tend to be the drier months; November and January, two of the rainiest.

As in most of Brazil, the population is a mixture of native, African and Portuguese or other European descendants. The Quadrado

The Brazilian praça, or square, still a focal point for socialising in so many small towns, is often a circular area in front of the main church – the word praça implies no square angles.

Trancoso’s Quadrado (literally, “Square”) is a rectangular village green lined with about 60 brightly coloured little houses and ancient trees. It is capped by the pretty, all-white São João Batista church at the end closest to the cliff by the beach overseeing the Atlantic Ocean. The Quadrado, coloured houses and Church are UNESCO protected.

The Quadrado – closed to cars – and Mirante, the lookout point behind it, make up the vital centre of Trancoso life, with capoeira, evening soccer games, boutiques, eateries, and charming pousadas.

Trancoso Beaches

Trancoso beaches are, to the north of the Trancoso River below the Quadrado: Praia dos Nativos, Rio da Barra and Taípe (site of Club Med and said to be part of Arraial d’Ajuda). South of the river, you’ll find Coqueiros, Rio Verde, Ponta de Itapororoca and Itaquema. They’re all beautiful; the south beaches have more beach bar options.

About eight miles south of the Quadrado, a gorgeous Discovery Coast beach deserves a stay for at least one night: Praia do Espelho.

Staying in a house might well be the ideal way to enjoy everything Trancoso has to offer. You’ll find all kinds of vacation rentals, from stunning design homes to charming and tiny bungalows.

Nearby Attractions

Monte Pascoal National Park, named for the mount the Portuguese spotted as the first sign of land as they approached the Bahia coast in April 1500, is a must-see in the Trancoso area.

Arraial d’Ajuda is part of ‘The Discovery Coast’ and a short ferry ride across the river from Porto Seguro, Arraial d’Ajuda forms part of the municipality of Porto Seguro, which has the nearest commercial airport. Arraial d’Ajuda is very much like an upmarket European tourist resort, without the associated expense. Fashionable, modern, vibrant and unspoiled.

Arraial d’Ajuda is a historical town situated on a plateau above the coast and is aimed at the discerning tourist, rather than the mass market approach of Porto Seguro. A major tourist destination in its own right, the town is much more charming than Porto Seguro.

History And Attractions

Arraial’s earliest recorded history dates back to the 16th century and the discovery and conquest of Brazil. There are processions and festivals here the year round.

This city is famous for it’s religious parties, some of the most traditional are St. Sebastian(20 January) and St. Cosme and St. Damian(September 27). The largest celebration is on 15th August, for St. Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda it attracts thousands, tourists and locals alike.

The nearby National Park of Monte Pascoal and Indian reservation and the white beaches and lagoons annually attract international tourists.

A peaceful tourist village with indisputable appeal, it’s narrow paved roads and dusty lanes wind beneath large, shady trees, with lovely pousadas and open air restaurants hidden among the greenery. Solid, brightly painted façades surround its plazas, and the air remains tinged with the scent of tropical vegetation.

In the evenings the place to visit is “Broduei” (pronounced “Broadway”). Here you can find bars and restaurants with all kinds of food (from Acarajé to Sushi to Mexican) and live music. You can also find locals offering their handicrafts as souvenirs. A second popular area is the Estrada do Mucugê, a bustling artery lined with boutiques, bars, and restaurants that magically spring to life come sundown.

There are many beaches here but the most popular are Araçaí, Apaga Fogo, Canoas, Mucugê, Tororão e Pitinga, some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere.

Porto Seguro is located on the Atlantic coast at a midway point between Salvador and Vitória. It is 707 km. south of Salvador and 613 km. north of Vitória. With 90km of beaches this is Bahias number one tourist destination and the second in the whole of Brazil.

The landscape hasn’t changed much since Captain Cabral’s fleet arrived. One hundred beaches are framed by the Atlantic Rainforest and cliffs ranging in colour from white to red.

Porto Seguro is today one of the main tourist destinations in Brazil.

Porto Seguro Town

The historical site in the Cidade Alta area is a National Heritage Monument put under government trust by a Federal Decree since 1973. It was one of the first towns in Brazil and played an important role during the first years of European colonization. It includes three churches and around 40 buildings (among private residential houses and public institutions)

The stretch from Porto Seguro to Caravelas is called the Costa do Descobrimento (Coast of the Discovery). The restaurants, resorts and quality inns of Arraial D’Ajuda, Trancoso and Caraíva offer charm and sophistication. Further south, Cumuruxatiba is another tourist magnet, combining simplicity with boat or jeep excursions. Spectacular coral reefs and humpback whales await divers at the National Marine Park of Abrolhos, close to the pleasant historical city of Caravelas.

In town, the busiest place is Passarela do Álcool (Alcohol Catwalk), lined with bars which stay open all through the night. Here you can have dinner with live music and buy gifts made in the region.

Carnival

The city offers one of the most famous Carnival parties in Bahia. “Electric Trios” (trucks carrying sound systems and live bands), dancing “blocos” and “cordões” (street dancing groups) drag thousands of tourists along the “Passarela do Álcool” Passageway and to beach bars.

Tourism And Beaches

Counting Tourism as it’s number one industry this has expanded fast in recent years and there is highly visible growth in Porto Seguro. What was once a small town of fewer than 10,000 people in the 1970s has become a city of over 100,000 people. One suburb on the southern bank of the Buranhém River, Arraial d’Ajuda, has grown from approximately 900 people in 1990 to 11,411 in 2005.

The beach kiosks that made Lambada such a hit in the late 1980s are still all the rage but the soundtrack has changed. Terapuã beach has many hotels and kiosks. There are shows day and night, dance lessons, exercise classes, restaurants, water sports, paragliding and helicopter flights.

The nearby Curuípe (with clear coral pools), Mundaí and Itacimirim beaches are more laid back. The Rio dos Mangues beach offers a quiet mangrove area and pools where the river is dammed by the reefs. The two other main beaches, Ponta Grande, with crystal clear waters and reefs, and Mutá, are long and nearly deserted.

Around 88% of the property here is owned by Brazilians which reflects the domestic popularity of this area. Developments are restricted to 2 storeys to minimize the environmental and scenic impact and to avoid spoiling the area.

Ilheus is a major city located in the southern coastal region of Bahia, Brazil, 430 km south of Salvador, the state’s capital. The city was originally founded in 1534 as Vila de São Jorge dos Ilheus and is known as one of the most important tourism centres of the North East of Brazil.

The Do Norte beach is a perfect spot for visitors looking to fish, swim or surf, one of the few surfing areas here as the ocean is too calm in most other areas.

Some of the more laid back beaches are the Acuípe, a beach that mixes sandbank vegetation with coconut fields, while the Canabrava beach has many rental cottages along a landscape that includes some incredible coral reefs.

While most tourists are visiting ‘Itacare’ for its beautiful beaches there’s a little known private beach called: ‘Itacarezinho’ (little Itacare). A great place to eat, relax and get in touch with nature as few tourists have discovered this hidden gem.

Tourist destinations such as Bahia – Brazil’s number one domestic holiday location are set to particularly benefit from the country’s growth as international travellers discover this tropical paradise and its under-valued property market.  As Dan Freeman from Brazil Bahia Property (IBBI) notes, “Bahia’s property market is ripe for investment as the World Cup and Olympics will showcase it to a whole world of tourists.”

Brazil’s property growth will improve infrastructure

These international investments will boost infrastructure across the north-east as well as improve aviation links, an aim president Dilma Rousseff highlighted on entering office.

Brazil does desperately need an infrastructure upgrade, as Giovanni Bisignani, the International Air Transport Association’s director general and chief executive officer, recently noted.

“Brazil’s airports will not be capable of successfully hosting the FIFA World Cup or the Olympics without major changes. Time is running out for major infrastructure projects,” he warned.

Although aviation in Brazil has grown by 10% since 2003, it is only ranked 37^th in the world – simply not good enough for the world’s eighth largest economy and one of its fastest growers.

However, Brazil’s growing economy and tourism prospects ensure that foreign and domestic investment will rapidly boost national infrastructure, promising gains for property investors.

The need for expansion combined with the county’s encouragement of foreign investment both in infrastructure and Brazilian property ensure that the country is likely to experience continued growth for some time.

Brazilian agricultural land promises a sound investment, as despite these promising developments in the coffee market, Brazilian coffee output is actually declining.  According to the country’s agriculture ministry, 2011’s output will be a full 13% smaller than 2010’s.

Furthermore, agricultural land investments in fast-growing  rural regions such as Bahia reduces the risk of being caught up in the urban property bubble which may be developing in the southern Brazilian cities of Rio de Janiero and Sao Paolo.  As Dan Freeman, the managing director of a British-backed Brazilian property company, Brazil Bahia Property, notes, ‘rural areas such as Bahia are still massively under-valued, yet their huge agricultural and industrial potential is ripe for development.’

Brazil’s land promises even more growth

Brazil boosts the most under-utilised farmland in the world, more than twice as much as America and Russia combined, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation.

This farmland is savannah – rigorous environmental protections ensuring that the pristine Amazonian rainforest will remain untouched – and so can be utilised without environmental or ethical concerns.

Brazil’s strength lies in its land,  replete with raw materials, oil and agricultural promise – the mighty Amazon river boasts the world’s largest reserves of fresh water. These resources are powering an economic growth of 7.5%.
