As you leave the harbour you face a three-hundred-year-old monument – the Portaló. This gateway is part of the fortress of Morro de Sao Paulo, built to contain Dutch invasions during the 17th century. The village here is almost as old as Brazil itself, it was fouded in 1535, and had strategic value, mainly during early colonization.
Cars are forbidden on Morro de São Paulo. If Brazil is considered a place of diversity, Morro is one of the best examples. This island draws visitors for the fine beaches and its natural pools of crystal clear water. Morro is an island of opposites, from the party animal who hardly sees daylight to the couple who want nothing nothing more than a deserted beach bordered with coconut trees.
Morro de Sao Paulo Beaches
Beach ‘One' has had summer
houses on it ever since anyone can remember. Nowadays, they serve as ‘Pousadas' or ‘inns' and home to surfers from all over the globe during the winter (American summer) months. This first beach is also home to most of the seaside restaurants.
If you're looking for excitement, head down to beach number ‘Two'. The action never stops. Brazilian ‘Luaus' take place along the beach every night. There is a music merriment multi-culture like nowhere else. The younger generation, and young at heart hang out here. Don't be surprised if the parties continue till sunrise.
On beach three you will find more Pousadas and Restaurants. As we make our way down the four beaches, you'll note they get progressively quieter. But here, a special treat. If you're a diver, or even if snorkelling is a pastime, Caita Island will deliver. A large barrier reed is just off shore.
The ‘Fourth' beach. It goes on forever. Another reef, serving as a natural barrier, allows coral to form in the hundreds of natural pools that line the shore. Quieter than the other three, you'll enjoy the sound of the surf and gentle breezes through the hundreds of palm fronds.
Morro de Sao Paulo, the island has become a favourite, and as you walk along the narrow streets, without any cars, you will hear the most varied accents of Spanish, English, Hebrew, German, Finnish, Japanese, Portuguese and ‘Bahianese'. There is room for everyone.
